A Study on Quality Evaluation Methods of IP Application for Wireless LAN

Abstract(in English) IEEB802.11b wireless LAN systems are being widely used in enterprise networks and hot spot services Moreover, real-time applications such as IP phone or Video conferencing are also becoming popular. Therefore demand for using those real-time applications over wireless LAN will increase. Wireless LAN systems have issues on channel impairments because of undesired signals or noises which other wireless systems generate. CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) protocol also causes the deterioration of network performance. In this paper, we show the practical method that clarifies the relation between the quality of services and DUR (Desired signal to Undesired signal Ratio) or multi-access. First, we evaluate some metrics of IP packets foivarious DUR and the number of wireless LAN users, and then, using those metrics, we estimate the speech quality of IP phone. The results indicate that properly designing of jitter buffer size will guarantee certain criteria of the speech quality even if the network quality is poor.
