Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Video communication or video broadcast service with a wide variety of communication environments and video terminals are expected, and in that service, best-effort video quality, which should be adapted for individual environment is also desired. Scalable video coding is currently high profile to achieve such service. Desired scalabilities are temporal, spatial, and distortion (SNR) scalability. The priority of these scalabilities depends on applications and communication environments. Several types of scalable video coding scheme exist and the most efficient scalability is different among them. This paper discusses what the desirable scalability is and what the most efficient scalable video coding scheme is for a certain communication environment. In addition, this paper presents the evaluation results on the emerging scalable video coding scheme, MCTF (Motion Compensated Temporal Filtering). And issues to be solved for temporal scalability are addressed.
