Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, there has been a strong demand for objective quality assessment methods for multimedia, which is spreading wide and fast. International bodies such as ITU recognize the need, and the standardization activities about this issue are in progress. This paper reports the current status of these activities, focusing mainly on video quality assessment. The frameworks for objective measurement of video quality include Full Reference (direct comparison of the original and the processed), No Reference (evaluation using only received pictures), and Reduced Reference (comparison of image features). An FR recommendation, which describes four different methods, has been published. More R & D efforts on this area are expected.
