Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) An upward-arrow and a downward-arrow drown on a paper should be perceived as indicating the upper and the lower direction respectively. When the arrow was used as a sign, the upward-arrow is recognized as an indicator of an anterior direction. To investigate the reason, indicating directions of arrows and subjective strength were measured where the angle of the tilt arrow was the dependent variable. As a result, the turning angle from the forward to the backward shifted slightly to the subject's side for the upper-arrow, but not for the downward-arrow. This result showed that the recognition of the upward-arrow as indicating the anterior direction would be caused by custom. Because the upward-arrow has been used as the indicator of the anterior direction, but downward-arrow has seldom been used as the indicator of the posterior direction.
