| 抄録(英) | The hollow-face illusion is an example of depth reversal occurring even with a real three-dimensional object that provides unambiguous depth cues. The effect of inversion, whereby the illusion is weaker when the face is presented inverted, shows the importance of object knowledge in generating the illusion. We report experiments investigating the importance of both object knowledge and geometric properties. Experiment 1 shows that the effect of object specific knowledge is not limited to faces and that it is graded rather than 'all-or-nothing'. Experiments 2 and 3 used a novel method and a virtual hollow-face. Experiment 2 suggests that absolute depth is not critical to the strength of the illusion but Experiment 3 showed the importance of local surface types. The results are interpreted as showing that both geometry and object knowledge affect the strength of the illusion. The latter must encode information about three-dimensional shape that affects the interpretation of bottom-up depth cues, possibly by determining prior probabilities within a Bayesian framework. |
