Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Many communication aid systems have been developed for seriously physically handicapped people like ALS patients. These include the systems with Row-Column Scanning Method (RCSM) etc. The RCSM is very simple but its input speed is slow, therefore, users often feel psychological stress. The eye-gaze input system is being studied as a novel interface: it operates a computer with eye movement only; the input speed is faster than that of RCSM. The most conventional eye-gaze input systems are due to the use of an infrared ray on the eyes to detect eye-gaze. It is said that the prolonged irradiation could cause eye diseases such as glassblower's cataract, retinitis Solaris and dry eyes. This paper proposes a new eye-gaze input system using a personal computer and a home video camera for eye-gaze detection under natural light. The system detects eye-gaze by image analysis based on the limbus tracking method, and does not require special image processing units or sensors. This system compensates errors in measurement with head-movement, that is, this can detect eye-gaze in high accuracy.
