Face Detection for Gesture Recognition System

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we investigate a face detection method for a gesture recognition system. In a gesture recognition system, a face in image might be so small that its parts (eyes, mouth and so on) can't be identified and its outline is not clear, when the distance from the person to the camera is large. In order to detect a small face, we focus on the method based on HMM (Hidden Markov Model). HMM is statistical model used to characterize the statistical properties of a signal. Then we examine a face detection method using HMM to investigate the effect of future vectors and the HMM topology for a face detection method that can detect a small face. Besides, the effect of the size difference between training faces and faces of evaluation data is investigated.
