Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It has been known that lightness assimilation and contrast could be affected by the attitude of observer. We manipulated the manner of viewing by changing the size or the visual angle of a test pattern and used the rating method to measure the assimilation and contrast effects. The observers who looked at the part of the test pattern tended to report the contrast effect than did the observers who saw the pattern as a whole. Also, the factor determining individual difference seemed to be the perceptual dimension (brightness or lightness) rather than the manner of viewing (partial or whole).
