Abstract(in English) | This paper describes our ongoing research on designing a navigation system for pedestrians. As the technology for Global Positioning system (GPS) has become less expensive and more available, the use of navigation systems in automobiles has become widespread. However, there are hardly any navigation systems designed for pedestrians. There are number of special problems that must be addressed to design a good system that can guide a pedestrian to their destination without losing their way. For example there is alignment effect, according to which if the displayed map is not aligned with the direction the user is facing then the user is likely to make an error in reading map. However, it is difficult to ascertain pedestrian's orientation when they are stopped. Also, when they are walking, we need to know how they are holding the navigation device in order to align the map display with their orientation. Moreover, even if a correctly aligned map can always be displayed, as a pedestrian is likely to change their orientation and how they hold the navigation device often, frequent changes in the map aligned can lead to confusion. In order to address all these problems, our goal is to develop a navigation system that can guide a pedestrian to their destination using landmarks. In other words, Instead of displaying the navigation by a map, our system will produce directions to the destination based on landmark. We focus in this research on people's spatial cognition. We would like to ascertain the efficacy of giving verbal instructions. |
