Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Screen readers enable people with severe visual impairments to use computers. They adopt "shosaiyomi" (explanatory expressions) so that their users can understand all the text information only through speech. Different expressions are assigned to every character handled in computers. These days screen reader users start to claim that some expressions are difficult to understand. With this background, we conducted a survey on the problems of expressions used in current major screen readers. Then, in order to prepare a set of more comprehensible explanatory expressions, word extraction from the Fundamental Vocabulary used for Educational Purposes and an experiment of kanji explanation by speech were conducted.
