Abstract(in English) | The concept of modesty (kenson) is familiar to the Japanese people and is frequently used quite unconsciously. However, I would like to point out that our conception of the term as well as prior research are based upon the preconception that the expression of modesty (kenson) used by a speaker is always understood correctly by a receiver. One may ask whether this is truly the case. Rather one may postulate that when a speaker's expression of modesty is not correctly transmitted to a receiver it creates misunderstandings. This research is based upon the premise that a speaker's expression of modesty is not always properly. Understood by a receiver. It analyzes the dangers caused by the communication gap that result from using expressions of modesty from linguistic, sociological and psychological perspectives. |
