A Study on Chinese Facial Expression : Faces acted in ad-lib performance

Abstract(in English) At the beginning of the research project on Chinese facial behavior, their typical facial expression of emotions were collected and analyzed. In order to investigate into what facial display appears in what situation, students who lived in Beijing and were majoring in theater were asked to act ad-lib performance for different emotional situations. After analyzing ad-lib performances of one male student by using Facial Action Coding System, the seven basic facial expressions of emotion were found, while some gestures and some typical matters inducing emotions were suggested to be typical for Chinese. In the discussion, we accented the important for the studies of Chinese facial expression to construct integrated database which consists of motion pictures of facial behaviors under various conditions, the results of sequential analysis of them, the results of evaluation experiment where the motion pictures were used as stimuli.
