Image Encoding Method Based on DWT for Mobile Devices

Abstract(in English) Recently, mobile devices such as cellular phones and PDAs have been popular for the access to the Internet. Enormous quantity of image data is exchanged on there. Coupled with the permeation of the mobile phone with a built-in camera, the demand of image retrieval for mobile devices is expected to increase. However, the low data transmission speed and low display resolution make it inconvenient to handle the images on the mobile devices. Therefore, we propose two coding techniques for the mobile display, which are specialized in Region of Interest (ROI). One is reduced display on non-ROI, and the other is prior transmission of the ROI to that of non-ROI. Our method enables to transfer data smoothly and display images quickly without deteriorating of resolution of ROI. We describe our techniques in detail and have evaluated the validity of our proposal methods by the experiments with subjects.
