Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Pre-filters often play an important role in improving both coding efficiency and subjective image quality in low bitrate video coding. We previously proposed a novel pre-filtering scheme based on anisotropic diffusion that can preserve subjectively important edges while smoothing noises and fine textures. In this paper, we extend our scheme to spatio-temporal diffusion in successive image sequence, so that it can suppress inter-frame difference that is typically encoded in MPEG-type standard video compression. How to select a temporal edge-stopping function is also discussed. MPEG-4 encoding simulations we conducted show that our spatio-temporal filter allows agood reduction in average bit counts of inter-frame predicted pictures.
