Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We examined the role of the Fourier components of the grating on the Cafe wall illusion by using the missing-fundamental (MF) grating. The Cafe wall figure comprised square-wave (SQ) gratings and thin gray lines between them. We substituted MF gratings for SQ gratings and test thc direction of illusion. If the Fourier components of the grating had effects on the illusion, the direction of illusion of the figure consisted of MF gratings did not rule by the phase difference of the pattern, but of the 3f component. On the contrary, if the perceived pattern determined the direction of the illusion, both figure consisted of SQ gratings and of MF gratings caused the illusion of same direction. Consequently, we found that the direction of illusion was determined by the phase difference of the strongest Fourier component of the MF grating, although this component was invisible. So, we concluded that the Cafe wall illusion is dominantly a 1st order, or a luminance phenomenon.
