Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In the field of VR(Virtual Reality) research and its applications, it is an essential technique to detect positions in three dimensional space. There are several kinds of position tracking systems, for example, mechanical, optical, ultrasonic or electromagnetic system. An electromagnetic tracking system is used more generally than the others in VR systems, because it has high flexibility, can measure data in real time, and is relatively inexpensive. Its accuracy, however, is seriously degraded by magnetic field distortions caused by metal and electronic equipments around the environment. Especially, it is difficult in VR space such a CAVE(CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment) to reduce these material. The error between the actual position and the measured position of a sensor increases in proportion to its distance from a transmitter. In fact, the position errors are greater than 80cm in the area of 3m far from the transmitter. Many calibration methods of position tracking systems are proposed. Most of all methods need to measure actual positions in a workspace. These methods, however, require enormous measurements of positions, for example, it needs more than 1000 points measurements in 3m× 3m × 3m workspace and it takes several hours. Therefore, this paper proposes new calibration method which reduces an effort of measurements of actual positions and obtain sufficient precision of the calibration. The method only reauires to move sensors on a wooden bar with a little restrictions in work space, and it takes less than10 minutes of calibration. Finally, the average error becomes 14.0cm of no calibration to 4.2cm.
