Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Cerebral lateralization of speech processing in those who stutter were assessed with noninvasive brain imaging technique, multi-channel near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), with which hemodynamic responses were recorded to analysis-synthesized intonational (voice pitch) (/itta/ and /itta?/) and phonemic (/itta/ and /itte/) minimal contrast word trains. The baseline block contained only /itta/, whereas the contrast block consisted of either a phoneme or a pitch minimal pair, whose contrast words were presented randomly at the equal probabilities. To analyze cerebral lateralization, we calculated laterality index of the peaks of the left and right total hemoglobin (Hb) responses to each contrast block relative to the preceding baseline block in the auditory area. Right-handed adults and children who stutter did not show normal leftward dominance for the phonemic contrast, which indicates that the cerebral dominance in processing heard speech is in disarray even in school-age stutterers. The NIRS method may be useful in screening young stutterers and in elucidating neural correlates of stuttering.
