Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Topics on onomatopoeic expressions have been discussed in relation to the physical characteristics of sound. This study shows the some relationships between the pitches of pure tones and the corresponding onomatopoeic expressions. Japanese examinees listened to three pitches of pure tones, 63, 500 and 4,000 Hz, and then described the sounds onomatopoeically in a paper form. With phonemic analysis, some characteristics on the word-initial consonants and the following vowels are extracted. Another experiment required examinees to determine pitches in response to specific onomatopoeic expressions. This results in the ranges of the onomatopoeic expressions.
