Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We developed a prototype model as an aid for finger Braille communication by people with visual and auditory handicaps. When the handicapped person communicates with a healthy person, the former wears a ring-like device on his/her finger while the latter simply speaks in his/her natural voice. The device can be used both as a receiver accepting messages by vibration and as a transceiver sending messages by tapping on the desk. The finger Braille code sent from the device is converted to voice using a voice synthesis chip, while, on the contrary, the voice is converted to finger Braille code using speech recognition software. This paper provides an outline of the system and a description of the methods used for information transfer and communication using the ring-like device.
