A study on the psychological factors affecting rater's evaluation of children's compositions : Validity and reliability of the criteria derived from the 1989 Japanese National Standards

Abstract(in English) This study aimed to clarify the mechanism for evaluating children's composition. Subjects were in-service and pre-service teachers who were divided into two groups (highly favorable and less favorable) based on their attitude towards compositions, and were asked to evaluate children's compositions using the items derived from the Japanese National Standards. The validity and reliability of the evaluation items were assessed in each group and compared across groups. Results of the analysis of item validity and reliability suggested that: 1) attitude towards compositions is one of the important psychological factors that can explain for the difficulty in evaluating children's compositions, 2) the nature of the difficulty of using the evaluation items differ among in-service and pre-service teachers, and 3) for pre-service teachers, availability of background information of the children can enhance the validity and reliability of their evaluation.
