Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Today, much importance has been attached to English presentation ability or communication ability. Several types of tests which evaluate English communication ability are performed in Japan. In this study, we analyzed several English tests for communication to educe their linguistical characteristics metrically. In short, we calculated the frequencies of character- and word-appearance of the long-passage reading and listening comprehension parts of the STEP Test, the TOEIC, and the TOEFL. Moreover, we investigated how much of the obligatory words for junior high school students in Japan are contained in each material, and estimated the difficulty using a principal component analysis. By comparing the difficulty of each test, we could educe the factors which show what levels the three kinds of tests have.
