Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A scheme to classify verbs is presented. This classification is based on a novel way of giving lexical definitions of a verb; the fundamental idea is that a verb denotes a process. A special style of sentence (quasi-C code) is used to describe the procedure characterizing universally the process. This sentence is regarded as the lexical definition of the verb. If such a sentence comprises a verb phrase, the class of the verb used in the phrase is regarded as, by definition, having higher rank than the class of the lexically defined verb. Thus, definition of ranks in the hierarchy of verbs is given one after another systematically.
