Vertically coupled waveguide bends and branches integrated on photonic wire cross grid waveguides for photonic Gate Array technology

Abstract(in English) We propose a new concept of photonic Gate Array technology for the flexible design of photonic integrated circuits. As its elements, vertically coupled waveguide bends and branches were fabricated on the crossing points of cross grid busline waveguides. The direction of propagation was successfully transmitted to the intended port in the bend, and the output was almost equally obtained from the intended ports (right and left ports) in the branch. Polarization and wavelength dependences(in the wavelength range of 1500-1580nm) was measured to be very small. Excess loss which corresponds to the subtraction of the propagation loss and the input/output coupling loss from the fiber-to-fiber insention loss was less than 0.5dB(aimed loss), and low loss branching characteristics were demonstrated.
