Fabrication of Functional Sampled Fiber Bragg Gratings for WDM Communication Systems

Abstract(in English) Sampled FBGs (fiber Bragg gratings) have been used as high channel count density components such as multiplexers, add/drop filters in wavelength division multiplexing systems. As the WDM systems continue to grow in complexity and sophistication with increasing numbers of channels, longer transmission distances and higher bit rates, new types of sampled FBGs with more functions are required to meet the demands: chirped sampled FBGs with dispersion compensating ability for higher bit rates, and longer distances; sampled FBGs with broad, dense reflection responses for more channels. However, fabrications of such sampled fiber Bragg gratings with phase mask method are difficult due to the imbalance of grating parameters and physical limits such as grating lengths and index changes. In this paper, we introduce methods to overcome problems and fabricate functional sampled FBGs. We study the effects of grating parameters on dispersion as well as channel characteristics, and realize chirped sampled FBGs with optimal values. We propose a method for realizing broad reflection spectra by interleaving different grating sections. We also show that by trimming relative phase shifts among grating sections, we can densify reflection spectra of sampled FBGs without increasing their lengths.
