Optical Spotsize Converter Using Narrow Tapered Structure for Silica-Based Planar Lightwave Circuits

Abstract(in English) We report a novel optical spotsize converter (SSC) for silica-based planar lightwave circuits (PLCs). The SSC is based on a laterally tapered waveguide with a narrow core width that can be fabricated simply by using the usual fabrication process. The novel SSC provides a large fabrication tolerance, which allows us to angle polish the PLC end faces to prevent reflection, and assemble compact and low-loss PLC modules. We fabricated the SSC on 1.5 %- Δ, 2.0 %- Δ, and 2.5 %- Δ waveguides, and successfully reduced the single mode fiber coupling loss to less than 0.4 dB/point regardless of the A value. Furthermore, we integrated our novel SSC with a 1.5 %-Δ arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and assembled a compact AWG module with a low center channel insertion loss of 2.2 dB, low polarization dependence, and low reflection of less than -60 dB.
