Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | It is logically impossible to induce meanings of words based on the observation of a limited number of instances. In spite of this problem of induction, young children map new words to their meanings instantly, and leam new words at a rate of 6- 10 words a day. In this talk, I present the results from a series of experiments that show how young children infer meanings of novel nouns and verbs. I then explore the mechanism underlying young children's lexical acquisition. |
