Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | A set of 44 semantic and 4 phonological word-fluency tasks were administered to 50 young and 50 healthy older adults. The participant was required to orally produce words in a semantic category, or words beginning with a letter (representing Japanese mora) displayed on a computer screen. She/he was encouraged to utter as many words as possible in 30 seconds. The result showed that the performance pattern across the 48 categories in the young adults was very similar to that in the older adults, and retrieval of famous person's names was most difficult even in the young adults. While in almost all tasks age-related decline was observed, it was most prominent in the proper-name tasks. Time-course analysis of word retrieval revealed that more than half of the retrieved words were produced during the first 5 seconds in the both groups, suggesting that slowing of response in the old is not responsible for the deficient word fluency. |
