Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Operating switches are widely used by persons with physical disabilities for operating electrical devices, such as computer and powered wheel chair. In order to select an optimum operating switch for a certain device used by a person with disabilities, the "adaptation work" is carried out presently by a group of people, such as a therapist, a helper and family members of the person. This work is usually time-consuming and difficult to be completed, because a lot of knowledge and experience regarding both assistive technology and impairments are needed. In order to simplify such an adaptation process, we have developed a computer-aided system capable of selecting optimum operating switches, according to subject's impairment conditions. In an attempt to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the system, we carried out experiments, in which optimum operating switches were selected for three different subjects with typical disabilities. For every case, our system could select all optimum switches, which were expected before experiments, suggesting its potential for clinical applications.
