Acquisition and Switching of Multiple Internal Models for Different Viscous Force Fields

Abstract(in English) We observed the learning process of human multi-joint reaching movements in an environment perturbed by two viscous force fields. In this experiment, we switched the two fields randomly, while presenting one of two kinds of cues corresponding to the two viscous force fields. The cues were either audio-visual (color back ground: red and blue; arrows showing the direction of rotation; sound cue: high and low beeps) or movement related (movements were paired in the same force fields; the first movement was a cue to the second movement.) We evaluated the performance with an error index, which was the accumulated deviation from the straight line connecting the start and end points. The error decreased significantly as a function of the trial number. When we removed the force fields randomly after learning, significant after-effects are observed. These results indicate that humans can simultaneously learn distinct internal models of the two force fields, and appropriately switch between them using cues.
