Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The retinex is a standard method for contrast enhancement of images based on human vision models. In this paper, we present a contrast enhancement method based on multi-scale nonlinear smoothing by iterated filtering of images. The iterated filtering scheme is derived from a nonlinear variance minimization problem and the properties of scale-space and edge enhancement for filters with local windows and global ones are analyzed. The computational cost for both filters is examined with experiments of image smoothing and the proposed method is applied to image contrast enhancement. It is shown that the filter with local window is faster than that with global window.
