Design Criteria for Space-Time Trellis Codes (STTC) in Block Fading Channels

Abstract(in English) In this report, we propose design criteria for geometrically uniform and non-uniform space-time trellis codes (STTC)in block fading channels (BFC). The proposed design criteria depend on the determinant of the codeword distance matrix when the required signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) to achieve the desired frame error rate (PER) is high (the number of receive antennas is small) and on the trace of the codeword distance matrix when the reauired S NR is low (the number of receive antennas is large). From the proposed design criteria, we derive the performance factors based on the determinant of the codeword distance matrix for a high SNR (PF_) and the trace of the codeword distance matrix for a low SNR (PF_). They are inverse proportion to the coding gain. For some STTC, we compute the values of the performance factors. From the computer simulation, we show that for the high SNR, we can evaluate the performance of STTC designed for quasi-static fading channels by the performance factor, PF_. We also show that for the low SNR, we can evaluate the performance of both STTC designed for quasi-static fading channels and fast fading channels by the performance factor, PF_.
