A Study of Phase Tracking Control for OFDM Systems

Abstract(in English) In OFDM systems, frequency offset is occurred because of the oscillator frequency mismatch between the transmitter and the receiver. Although frequency offset is generally compensated by an AFC, a residual fre- quency offset and a phase noise, which remain after the AFC, affect the demodulation performance. Thus, a phase tracking scheme is needed to compensate the residual frequency offset and the phase noise after the AFC in OFDM systems. In general, pilot subcarriers are employed for phase tracking in OFDM systems. However, the pilots are affected not only the residual frequency offset but ICI. Therefore, compensation of phase variation caused by the residual frequency offset is difficult. In this report, we propose a phase tracking scheme for OFDM systems in the presence of phase noise. The proposed phase tracking scheme estimates the residual offset frequency in the frequency domain, and compensates it in the time domain. Therefore, the proposed scheme reduces ICI caused by the residual frequency offset in a frequency domain, and can track phases more accurately than the conventional compensation scheme. Simulation results show the proposed phase tracking scheme can compensate the residual frequency offset more accurately than the conventional phase tracking scheme in the presence of phase noise.
