An Accurate Timing Recovery Method Employing Channel Estimation for OFDM Packet Transmission

Abstract(in English) This paper proposes an accurate timing recovery method for OFDM packet transmissions, which can compensate for a timing recovery error by employing channel estimation. The OFDM mobile communications suffer from inter-multicarrier interferences due to the large timing error even when multipath delay time is less than guard interval (GI). With the delay time greater than GI, the performance of timing recovery deteriorates severely. To solve such a problem, the proposed timing recovery method carries out the following procedures: (I) it performs tentative timing recovery by calculating auto-correlation of received signals, (ii) its channel estimator estimates a channel impulse response by using the tentative timing, (iii) dominant path components are extracted from the estimation result, and the tentative timing is adjusted, and the number of taps of a transversal filter that a channel estimator for signal detection uses is also determined. In order to verify performances of the proposed timing recovery, it is applied to the OFDM turbo equalizer and, computer simulations are conducted with channel conditions where the maximum delay time is nearly equal to or much greater than GI. It is demonstrated that the equalizer with the accurate timing recovery scheme can achieve as good PER performances as the one with the ideal timing.
