Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | In June-July 2002, we carried out the World's first experiment of 3rd generation (3G) mobile communications (IMT-2000, 3GPP) by the radio relay at an altitude of 20 km using unmanned stratospheric-flying solar-electric airplane "Pathfinder Plus". The experiment demonstrated viability of IMT-2000 communications using high altitude platform station (HAPS). The IMT-2000 experiments were carried out twice in Kauai Island, Hawaii under the collaboration between Japanese telecom mission side (CRL and TAO) and U. S. flight mission side (AeroVironment Inc., SkyTower Inc. and NASA). In the first test, we could not establish the IMT-2000 link via Pathfinder Plus flying at an altitude of 20 km since onboard transponder received unexpected interference in the IMT-2000 reverse link, coming from a cellular system in commercial use in Oahu Island 200 km away from Kauai Island. Therefore we managed to establish the link by connecting an external antenna with high gain to the cellular phone. After the first flight test, we developed 9-element receiving array antenna with low sidelobe level so as to suppress the impinging interference signals. We succeeded in the IMT-2000 communication with a cellular phone without the external antenna. This paper presents the experimental and analytical results. |
