Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A network model of the entorhinal cortex layer II that consisted of stellate cells and an interneuron was constructed. The stellate cell reproduced subthreshold oscillations observed in physiological experiments. The subthreshold oscillations were synchronized with each other through an inhibitory interneuron in the present network model, and rhythmic activity in the theta frequency range was generated. Neuronal firing in the entorhinal cortex layer II is projected to the entorhinal cortex layer V through the tri-synaptic circuit of the hippocampus. Since connections from the layer V to the layer II exist in the entorhinal cortex, loop circuits may exist in the entorhinal cortex-hippocampal system. Firing of the stellate cells in the layer II was therefore projected to other stellate cells in the same layer with the delay time of 25 ms in the present model. Consequently, the stellate cells fired successively at intervals of 25 ms in depolarized phases of the theta wave. The present entorhinal cortex model reproduces the phase precession that has been known as a characteristic of place cells.
