Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, compensation for polarization mode dispersion (PMD) at the receiving end has been extensively studied. On the other hand, optical solitons have been proved to possess large PMD tolerance, though in the transmission of the pulse stream, the PMD may be emphasized by the nonlinear interaction between neighboring symbols. In this paper, we numerically study an application of PMD compensator (PMDC) to optical soliton transmission. Considering a system of 1000km distance with a bit-rate of 40 Gbit/s, PMDC can work well for twice as much PMD value as the soliton trapping is expected (~0.1ps/km^<0.5>). However, for three times larger than is permitted by the trapping, the PMDC occasionally show little improvement in waveform.
