Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper, we discuss performance of TCP over wireless link with ARQ for bit error and packet forwarding protocol for handover-caused packet loss. We have shown that in an environment where both bit error and handover occur, handover degrades the performance of TCP, because frames stored in a link layer buffer are discarded when a handover occurs. In this paper, we propose two buffer control approaches to resolve the above problem depending on applicability of cross-layer operation between layer 2 (ARQ) and layer 3 (packet forwarding). The first approach makes use of cross-layer operation. In this approach, layer 3 buffer operates with layer 2 buffer. When a handover occurs, stored datagrams and layer 2 frames are forwarded to the new base station, which prevents bursty packet loss. The other approach can be applied even for the case that cross-layer operation is not applicable. In this approach, arrival frames are randomly discarded like RED operation, which reduces stored packets in a base station. Our results indicate that the integrated design with taking account of both bit error and handover is required for the future mobile Internet.
