Dispersion compensating fiber modules for dispersion shifted fibers

Abstract(in English) High bit rate, long distance and dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) transmission systems using dispersion shifted fibers (DSF) require dispersion compensation for accumulated dispersion of DSF over a broad wavelength range in the L-band. Slope compensating and dispersion compensating fibers (SC-DCF) for DSF have been designed and fabricated. The fabricated SC-DCFs show targeted dispersion slope compensation ratios and good optical performance. It has been confirmed that optical performance of SC-DCF for DSF is similar to that of SC-DCFs for non-zero dispersion shifted fibers (NZ-DSF) with the same compensation fiber length. Nonlinearities of the SC-DCFs for DSF modules were evaluated. It has been confirmed that nonlinear phase shifts are smaller than usual SC-DCF modules, because the fiber length of SC-DCF modules for DSF are shorter than usual SC-DCF modules. SC-DCF for DSF were packaged into modules, reliabilities for the modules were evaluated. As a result, it has been confirmed that the modules have good optical performance and high reliability.
