Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCFs) have unique features due to the particular structure, in which air holes are periodically arranged in the cladding region. The light propagates along the fiber by the Total Internal Reflection (TIR) or the Bragg Reflection. Because of the high accuracy requirement for the hole dimension, it is more difficult to fabricate PCFs than the conventional Single Mode Fiber (SMF). After the PCF was proposed, lots of examinations have been done to reduce its optical attenuation. The optical loss of Index Guiding PCF has been reduced to 0.37dB/km from the first optical loss report of 240dB/km. This makes it possible to apply the PCF to optical devices, further more to transmission media. Here, we describe the fabrication and the loss properties of PCFs and show the examination of reducing the optical loss in PCFs.
