Study on design of long-distance optical transmission systems employing remote amplification

Abstract(in English) Remote amplification has attractive advantages in that long-distance repearter-less transmission is available because of the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) which is located on the optional point between a transmitter and a receiver, and that the signal power is amplified by the combined effects of the EDF and the distributed Raman amplification. The systems employing remote amplification require enough understanding of characteristics of the pump light transmission and the Raman gain in addition to the signal transmission. This paper shows a design method in which the variations of optical fiber characteristics are taken into consideration based on experimentally obtained results. Using this design method, we showed two examples. Firstly we clarified requirements of optical fiber characteristics to realize a target repeater-less distance. Then we clarified transmission distance that is available by applying remote amplification to installed networks consisted of standard single-mode fibers and dispersion shifted fibers.
