Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Low loss optical fibers are now indispensable transmission media for long transmission systems. Ultra low loss of 0.151 dB/km, which breaks the previous record of 0.154 dB/km in 1986, has been achieved. This ultra low loss fiber was obtained by improving pure silica core fiber. Its large effective area of 112μm^2 contributes to suppress nonlinear effects. Its possible impact on transmission systems is also described. Loss in C and L band is below 0.160 dB/km and wide, which is attractive for EDFAs systems. In unrepeatered transmission system, low loss fiber will extend transmission distance by 30 % compared to conventional Ge-SMF, and 400km distance transmission is possible when it is combined with backward pumped distributed Raman amplification.
