Abstract(in English) | This paper describes our ongoing research to construct a natural scene image recognition system using pixel-parallel VLSIs, one of which performs Gabor wavelet transformation known as a feature extraction model in the primary visual cortex of the brain. In the first step of the recognition process, coarse region segmentation is performed by a resistive-fuse network to pay attention to a specific region of the image. Each region is separately extracted and applied to feature extraction processing by Gabor wavelet transforms. Using the obtained Gabor features, flexible graph matching based on the dynamic-link architecture is performed. For hardware implementation of the feature extraction, we have designed pixel-parallel VLSIs based on the merged analog-digital circuit architecture using pulse-modulation signals. This paper describes in detail (1) a resistive-fuse network circuit for coarse region segmentation and a resistive network circuit for Gabor-type filtering using a pulse-modulation pixel circuit, and the results of their LSI design, (2) a cellular-automaton-type region extraction algorithm and its implementation using an FPGA, and (3) an FPGA board with a PCI-bus interface, which is used for controlling the image processing LSIs and for the basis of the system. |
