A radar image simulator of ocean surfaces

Abstract(in English) Authors have developed a radar image simulator for the aid of the radar image analysis and as a tool for the training of radar image analysts. This paper describes a radar image simulator of ocean surfaces with consideration of ocean waves though the previous simulator assumed that ocean surface was flat. The simulator uses two-scale model for ocean surface and calculate the radar cross section (RCS) with the small perturbation method. The comparison between the calculated and the measured RCS for like-polarization shows that there is a good agreement between 20°~ 70° incident angles. The comparison for closs-polarization shows that there is a significant difference in absolute RCS but agreement in the relative trend. The simulated radar images under the different sea state indicate that the sea clutter increase in proportion to the roughness of ocean in a similar way with real observation.
