Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The NASDA has successfully launched a Whale Ecology Observation Satellite (WEOS), classified as a micro satellite, on 14 December 2002 by H-2A rocket as one of the piggyback satellites. The objective of the WEOS is to collect the data from probes, attached to whales for studying the ecology of whales globally. Another objective in engineering aspect is to develop the WEOS with sophisticated functions cost-effectively based on our philosophy. As the result of making various efforts, we achieved remarkable cost reduction for the development of the WEOS. The WEOS is perfectly operating as planned right now on the orbit. This paper describes the system of WEOS, philosophy and technique for cost reduction, and its results.
