Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We adopted gravity gradient attitude control technique for a Whale Ecology Observation Satellite (WEOS) to point the communications antennas toward the earth, and the GPS antenna toward the zenith. It is the first application of gravity gradient control technique for attitude stabilization to a satellite in Japan. The attitude control system of the WEOS consists of a three axis magnetometer, a magnetic torquer coil, and a deployable mast with a mass fixed at the top, and attitude control software. This system carries out rate damping control of the principal axis. The extended mast with top mass then enables the earth pointing of the antennas. After the separation of the WEOS from, the H2A-4 rocket, tumbling occurred due to the imbalance force in the three separation springs. By using attitude control command we damped the tumbling, then extended the mast. The attitude of the WEOS has thus established the attitude stabilization, and the antennas keep pointing to the earth surface. This paper describes the attitude control system, operation procedure, and control results.
