Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Habitat of whales is too vast to get the detailed data of the ecology. This paper describes a satellite system for revealing whale ecology. This plan had wan a prize at the First Satellite Design Contest held in 1993. The idea makes use of the satellite retrievable of global data. Probes attached to whales send ecological data to the satellite, which receives the data and store them onboard. A ground control station sends out command signal and receives the ecological data sent out from the satellite in response, which allows detailed analysis. We have developed the satellite system cost effectively by careful use of parts and components for consumers' electronics. NASDA has launched our satellite named WEOS (Whale Ecology Observation Satellite) into a polar orbit of 800km high, on December 14, 2004 by H2A-4 rocket as one of the piggy back satellites at the occasion of the launching of an earth observation satellite ADEOS-2. After several maneuvering of the attitude concerning to the deployment of a mast for gravity gradient stabilization, the WEOS is operating quite satisfactorily with its antennas keep facing to the earth's surface. We are continuing operations for attaching probes to whales. This system is applicable not only to the study of whale ecology, but also to search and rescue system, studying land animals, and monitoring of various ground environments.
