Abstract(in English) We have developed an MPEG-4 video codec hardware accelerator LSI for mobile applications. This hardware accelerator consists of a RISC-based controller, a 32-parallel SIMD processing unit and a hard-wired DCT/IDCT engine. This MPEG-4 hardware accelerator, video interface unit and audio interface unit are integrated on a 6.0mm×6.0mm die. This MPEG-4 LSI architecture is based on hardware and software co-processing. The chip enables MPEG-4 simple profile QVGA video encoding at 1Oframes/s and decodine at 15frames/s. This LSI consumes 270mW at 54MHz.
