Probability of Failure on Demand for Safety-Related Systems

Abstract(in English) In accordance with an international safety standard, IEC 61508, it is required that a Safety Integrity Level (SIL) should be given to each safety function of Safety-Related Systems (SRS). The SIL is specified by the proof-test-interval-average Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD) of the SRS in the low demand mode of operation. Under the assumptions in IEC 61508 Part 6 Annex B, this paper presents concrete equations for estimation of PFD of the SRS without self-diagnosis functions, in the two cases where the repair time is negligible and not negligible. Furthermore it is shown that there is only little difference between the cases. Hence we can use the simpler equation obtained in the former case for the latter from a practical viewpoint.
