A Study of distance perception using cue of direct and reverberant ratio for 3D Audio reproduction

Abstract(in English) In the 3D audio image controlling method, which controls the input level of the loudspeakers arranged near and far away, a subjective evaluation was performed by examining the relative distance perception of octave band noise by direct and reverberation ratio energy. It was found that the distance perceived by the direct and reverberation ratio has frequency dependency, and that the distance perceived for 5,660 Hz or more is not significantly different from that perceived when the ratio is changed. The frequency dependency of distance perception was also used to examine the bit efficiency and validity of the 3-dimensional audio coding method which unifies the zone that does not influence awareness of distance. Tests using the 3-dimensional audio coding method which combines 5,660 Hz or more frequency components showed that the bit-rate efficiency can be increased by about 34% compared with that by dual mono AAC coding, without any degradation of 3D audio reproduction.
