KANDAS: Kanji DB System for WWW Based Kanji Learning Systems

Abstract(in English) Kanji learning is one of important parts in Japanese learning. Various kinds of Kanji learning ways have been proposed and practiced. Computer utilization for Kanji learning has been focused recently by the spread of PC so that many Kanji CAI systems and electronic dictionaries have been developed. Generally, they provide students a learning environment for a special area of Kanji learning. Therefore, it is hard for students to learn various kind of Kanji knowledge using only one Kanji CAI system or one electronic dictionary. We have proposed and prototyped a learning environment for learning various kinds of Kanji learning on WWW called WWW-KALIST(WWW-KAnji Learning Intelligent CAI system for knowledge STability). Our system has very flexible system architecture but it must be designed for the system, database and knowledge base developers to construct them easily. In this viewpoint, we develop a Kanji data base system called KANDAS (KANji Database Access Server). Kanji CAI systems can get Kanji data from KANDAS via information network. We report the design of "KANDAS" in this paper.
